Visitation<\/strong><\/p>\n

A poem by Deborah Gaudin<\/em>
\nChasing the ghost of Elizabeth Goudge
\nPembrokeshire Autumn 2007<\/em><\/p>\n

I thought I’d lost sight of you in the wet
\nempty town,
\nbut your hair was white mist,
\nthe scribbling waves echoed your pen
\nin their perfect, quiet constancy.<\/p>\n

Extending a hand as your relict stepped
\nfrom within
\nthe grey chambered spiral of her home,
\nstepping over the carpet to take your place
\nin the window overlooking the bay.<\/p>\n

Sheltering in doorways I heard your gentle
\nthemes in
\nthe busker’s flute, the click of dogs claws
\non the wet shiny pavements steep street,
\naccompanying the harp of rain.<\/p>\n

I found your prose leaning against poets
\nat the back
\nof the small stone book shop, a shy guest
\nrubbing spines with their dusty eloquence,
\na clean taste in the mouth.<\/p>\n

The hidden hills were full of others work,
\nno words of yours.
\nBut your bones were as strong and homely
\nas the ancient village which overlooked
